The decision on how to address a contentious social media post involving a Canadian cadet and her instructor, highlighted by U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, lies with the individuals concerned, as stated by Canada’s top military leader. General Jennie Carignan, speaking from a gathering of defense chiefs in Victoria, British Columbia, emphasized that both personnel are being supported by the Canadian military following the controversial post and will have the autonomy to respond as they see fit.

“We are engaging with the affected personnel to determine their preferred course of action,” said Carignan regarding the situation.

The post shared by Hegseth on Monday featured an image from the Cadet Training Centre in Vernon, British Columbia, showing two young women in uniform with the caption “this is real” alongside a Canadian flag. While the online reaction to Hegseth’s post included derogatory comments about the individuals’ appearance in the photo, it also sparked significant backlash from the Canadian public.

Carignan underscored that the primary focus is on supporting the affected members, without specifically addressing the issue with her U.S. counterparts or seeking an apology. She expressed pride in the Canadian Armed Forces and their professionalism, emphasizing the significant contributions made by the Canadian military.

The controversy surrounding the post was described by Carignan as a matter for future discussion. The Army Cadet League of Canada condemned the online harassment and ridicule directed at cadets, stressing that disparaging remarks towards youth striving to better themselves and serve their communities are unacceptable.

The national cadet program, aimed at youth aged 12 to 18, offers opportunities for personal development and skill-building as adolescents transition into adulthood. The circumstances surrounding how Hegseth became aware of the cadet training program’s Instagram account, which had 1,821 followers as of Tuesday morning, remain unclear.

The post from Hegseth comes amid heightened trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. following failed trade negotiations last month. The Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on various Canadian goods in August, leading to reciprocal duties by Canada. President Trump has been targeting Canada in public statements and social media posts, with some members of his administration making disparaging remarks about Canada’s military capabilities.

In response to the latest developments, Hegseth is facing internal pressure due to ongoing challenges, including an unpopular war with Iran, military leadership changes, and other issues.
