Jennifer Mason, a consumer looking to increase her protein intake, has been utilizing whey protein powder in her diet for several years. However, she is now facing budgetary concerns due to the significant price hikes in whey protein. As a new parent dealing with escalating costs, she is reconsidering her purchasing habits.

Mason explained, “I’m cutting back and exploring natural sources of protein in my meals instead of relying on products.”

In response to the rising demand, food producers and fast-food chains are incorporating whey protein into a wide range of items, from snacks to beverages. This surge in usage is contributing to shortages of whey protein and driving prices to unprecedented levels. Moreover, the U.S.-Canada trade conflict is adding to the cost pressures, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers.

Various popular brands are introducing whey protein-infused products to cater to health-conscious customers. Influencers in the fitness industry are promoting protein-centric diets, encouraging the constant consumption of dietary protein. Additionally, individuals taking weight-loss medications like Ozempic are increasing their protein intake to prevent muscle loss.

The surge in demand is depleting the global supply of whey protein concentrate, a key ingredient in high-protein foods. John Murray, who oversees marketing at Daryl’s Bars, a protein snack company in Tecumseh, Ont., noted the challenges faced by smaller businesses in securing sufficient whey protein due to larger corporations placing substantial orders.

With most of Canada’s whey protein imported from the U.S., where prices have more than doubled in the past eighteen months, the situation has become more difficult for Canadian businesses. The U.S. Dairy Export Council highlighted the insatiable domestic demand for high-protein whey, leading to reduced availability for exports.

To cope with the escalating costs, Murray mentioned that his company had to raise prices on their protein snacks due to the unsustainable price hikes. He expressed the company’s preference for sourcing all necessary materials domestically if possible.

The ongoing trade dispute is further straining food manufacturers, with the Canadian government imposing 50% tariffs on American whey imports in response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. Businesses in Canada can seek relief through tariff-remission programs, provided they can demonstrate the lack of feasible domestic or non-U.S. sources for the goods.

Food economist Mike von Massow from the University of Guelph highlighted the complexities in increasing whey protein supply due to its production as a byproduct of cheese-making. He emphasized the costly and intricate process of drying liquid whey into powder, underscoring the limited processing capacity in Canada compared to the U.S.

While the trade war is pushing up prices, the Dairy Processors Association of Canada anticipates a shift towards sourcing from New Zealand to offset increased costs. This transition, however, comes with significant shipping expenses.

Consumers may experience price hikes across the supply chain, affecting products like protein drinks. Audrey Marcoux expressed her willingness to bear the extra cost due to her fitness routine, but others like Nathan Bugiardini are considering cutting back if prices continue to rise. In response to soaring whey protein costs, some individuals are exploring plant-based alternatives and unprocessed whole foods.

As the prices of whey protein remain elevated, consumers like nineteen-year-old Melania Antic are feeling financially strained. Antic mentioned feeling demotivated by the high costs, especially when it comes to gym workouts and protein consumption.
