Viewers of the popular reality show Big Brother U.K. are facing backlash for their behavior following a heated discussion on transgender rights, pronouns, single-sex bathrooms, and the participation of transgender athletes in sports. The incident took place during the latest episode of the show, which features a group of individuals living together in isolation, competing in challenges, and vying to win a cash prize.

The debate unfolded when two new contestants, Twinks Burnett, 36, and Catrin Richards, 23, entered the house. Burnett initiated a conversation about LGBTQIA+ allyship and gender identity, sparking differing opinions among the housemates. Housemate Philip Regan, a gay individual, expressed support for freedom of speech and highlighted the changing landscape of gender pronouns over time.

The discussion also delved into the topic of transgender individuals using gender-specific restrooms, with house guest Rochelle Rackham expressing discomfort with the idea. Burnett emphasized the importance of fostering a sense of community to bridge these ideological gaps.

Subsequent conversations captured on microphones revealed tensions within the house, with Regan suggesting that Burnett was stirring up trouble by addressing transgender issues. This exchange prompted criticism on social media, with many viewers urging the show’s network, ITV, to address the perceived transphobia displayed by Rackham and Regan.

The incident mirrors the ongoing societal debate in the U.K. concerning transgender rights, including discussions on the legal definition of sex under the Equality Act, the inclusion of transgender athletes in sports, and access to gender-affirming healthcare. The country’s Supreme Court previously ruled that the term “woman” in anti-discrimination laws only pertains to individuals assigned female at birth, leading to further controversy and debate.

As the controversy unfolds on the show, plans for a revival of Big Brother Canada have been announced, with the franchise set to return to screens in April 2027. The show, originating in the late 1990s in the Netherlands, has garnered international success and popularity across various countries. Bell Media’s agreement includes the upcoming season of Big Brother Canada along with earlier seasons and the French-language series Big Brother Célébrités.
