The Dallas Mavericks and Klay Thompson have reached an agreement on a contract buyout, concluding a two-year period that was marred by the surprising trade involving Luka Doncic.

Thompson is set to join the Miami Heat after clearing waivers, as per a source familiar with the plans of the five-time All-Star. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, mentioned that Thompson is likely to finalize the deal with the Heat by Sunday if no other team claims him.

The decision for the buyout follows the Mavericks’ failure to make the playoffs during Thompson’s time with the team, which followed Doncic leading Dallas to the NBA Finals in 2024.

Initially acquired in a sign-and-trade deal with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson was brought to Dallas to bolster the team’s 3-point shooting alongside Doncic and Kyrie Irving. However, the trio’s potential was shattered after Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis in 2025, leading to a series of setbacks with Irving’s injury and Davis’ subsequent trade to the Washington Wizards.

The franchise’s trajectory took a hit after the Doncic trade, but a stroke of luck saw the Mavericks clinch the top pick in the draft, selecting standout rookie Cooper Flagg from Duke, who later earned Rookie of the Year honors, injecting optimism into the team.

Flagg’s arrival prompted Thompson to adapt to a bench role for the first time since his rookie year with the Warriors.

Thompson’s buyout is part of a broader overhaul of the Mavericks’ roster, with only five players remaining from two years ago. The team also underwent changes in the front office and coaching staff.

Having secured four NBA championships with the Warriors, Thompson, aged 36, spent the majority of his career with Golden State, showcasing impressive scoring averages and 3-point shooting percentages. His departure from the Mavericks marks the end of a significant chapter for both parties.

In a separate development, DeMar DeRozan has agreed to a one-year contract with the Denver Nuggets, signaling his fifth team in his 18-year career. The veteran player, seeking his first championship, will bring his experience and skills to the Nuggets’ backcourt.

DeRozan’s addition follows the Nuggets’ trade involving young talent Peyton Watson, as the team aims to strengthen its roster for the upcoming season.

Throughout his career, DeRozan has been a consistent scorer, averaging close to 20 points per game, with notable stints at Toronto, San Antonio, Chicago, and Sacramento. His move to the Nuggets signifies a new chapter in his quest for NBA success.
