Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community in the Island Lake region of eastern Manitoba, according to the RCMP. The incident was reported to the police when the children were brought to the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station on Wednesday afternoon. Family members found the toddlers in a nearby lake and brought them to the nursing station with the assistance of First Nation safety officers. Despite efforts to save them, the boys were declared dead at the nursing station.

Authorities believe that the boys wandered away from their home and entered the lake on their own accord, with no signs of foul play. The community, led by Anisininew Okimawin Grand Chief Alex McDougall, is offering support to the grieving family in the wake of the tragic loss. The family had previously installed a fence to prevent direct access to the water, highlighting the shocking and devastating nature of the incident.

Garden Hill Anisininew Nation, located approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg, is reeling from the heartbreaking event. The RCMP have noted that there have been a total of five drowning deaths in Manitoba in the current year, with Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito expressing condolences and emphasizing the challenging nature of such tragedies. The RCMP is committed to providing support to the affected family during this difficult time.
