Canada’s male and female teams have progressed to the quarterfinals of the flag football world championships held in Germany. The men’s team, after a 37-28 loss to Japan, secured the second spot in their group with a 2-1 standing. Their scheduled match against Nigeria was canceled due to visa issues faced by the Nigerian team. Japan’s quarterback, Take Taniguchi, threw five touchdown passes, while Canada’s former CFL quarterback, Michael O’Connor, managed three TD passes. In the quarterfinals, Canada will compete against American Samoa, who surprised by defeating the top-ranked U.S. team.

On the other hand, the women’s team claimed the top spot in their group with a flawless 3-0 record following their 34-20 victory over Japan. Their upcoming quarterfinal match will be against Austria. A win in this game would propel the Canadian team into a semifinal clash against the winner of the duel between Mexico and Spain. Quarterback Sara Parker exhibited an impressive performance with four touchdown passes against Japan, including two to Caroline Moquin-Joubert.

Additionally, Alexane Fournier and Marianne Quirion also contributed with TD receptions, while Frederique Morneau scored a rushing touchdown as Canada mounted a remarkable comeback from a halftime deficit of 20-13 with 21 unanswered points in the second half. Apart from vying for the world title, teams are also aiming for a chance to secure spots in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, which will mark the sport’s Olympic debut. The top two finishers at the world championships will secure these coveted Olympic berths. Fans can catch all the matches of the event through live streaming on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem.
