Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed that ongoing discussions with the U.S. to prevent new tariffs from being imposed this week are sensitive and demanding. Carney intends to engage with his American counterpart within the next 48 hours to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement. In a press briefing in St. John’s, Carney refrained from divulging specifics about the negotiation progress publicly, emphasizing the importance of privacy during delicate talks.

When questioned about potential retaliation if an agreement is not reached, Carney assured readiness for all scenarios. Recent communications between Carney and President Donald Trump focused on trade negotiations, as confirmed by Audrey Champoux, a prime minister spokesperson. Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief negotiator Janice Charette engaged in extensive discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, aiming to prevent upcoming tariffs and decrease existing levies on various industrial goods in exchange for certain Canadian concessions.

Following an extended meeting between the Canadian officials and their U.S. counterparts, there were indications that it might be the final ministerial-level discussion. Despite this, the possibility of additional meetings remained uncertain. The American negotiating team was expected to brief Trump after the meeting, with no fixed plans for further discussions at the moment. The focal point of the negotiations revolves around trade-offs, with the U.S. seeking changes in the Canadian liquor market and removal of Canadian tariffs on U.S. automobiles, while Canada aims for the elimination of threatened U.S. tariffs and relief for sectors impacted by existing levies.

Despite signals from Greer that the U.S. is unwilling to abolish its tariff structure entirely, there have been reported advancements in negotiations. Erin O’Toole, a member of the advisory committee, acknowledged progress in talks but highlighted the necessity for fair deals beneficial to Canadian interests. O’Toole emphasized the importance of avoiding tariff escalations that could harm both economies and workers, underscoring the significance of reaching mutually beneficial agreements.
