NASA initiated a new venture to explore significant questions in astrophysics and cosmology by launching the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, the latest flagship observatory, on Sunday. The telescope, repurposed from a spy satellite, has a budget of around $4 billion and was launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., using a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
The primary objective of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is to study cosmic mysteries like dark energy and dark matter, investigate gravity on large scales, and search for exoplanets beyond our solar system. The telescope will orbit beyond the moon and is expected to operate for at least five years, with the potential for an additional five years based on its fuel reserves.
Originally intended for a spy satellite program under the National Reconnaissance Office, the telescope was repurposed by NASA for cosmic exploration after the spy satellite program was discontinued due to budget overruns. Named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will be positioned at Lagrange Point 2, approximately 1.6 million kilometers from Earth.
The telescope’s capabilities are expected to complement those of existing observatories like the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope.
