A woman from Prince George speculates that she might be the inspiration behind Dolly Parton’s song “Jolene.” Juline Whelan claims to have met the singer in 1972, fitting the description of the young girl Parton mentioned as the source of the song’s title.
According to Parton, she encountered a girl with red hair, green eyes, and fair skin who introduced herself as Jolene during an early career event. She promised to write a song about her, which later became the famous track.
Whelan, now reminiscing about the encounter, recalls meeting Dolly Parton in 1972 at a concert while on a family trip to Disneyland. She approached Parton for an autograph, particularly drawn to her song “Coat of Many Colors.”
Years later, after watching a TV movie about Parton’s life, Whelan researched the origins of “Jolene” and stumbled upon the interview where Parton described meeting the girl named Jolene. Seeing similarities between herself and the description, Whelan started to connect the dots.
The frequent mix-up of her name with “Jolene” further convinced Whelan of the possibility. She found it normal for people to mistake her name, given the resemblance to the song’s title.
Although the song’s inspiration stemmed from a child, its lyrics convey a mature theme of love and jealousy. Parton revealed that the narrative was influenced by a real-life incident involving a flirtatious bank teller pursuing her husband.
Despite initial annoyance when the song was released, Whelan now appreciates its significance and humor. She has come to terms with sharing a name with the iconic character portrayed in the song.
