A Calgary resident leading a campaign to expel U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra from Canada is surprised by the overwhelming support the petition has garnered. Over 100,000 individuals have signed the online petition, which is slated for presentation in the House of Commons. The petition asserts that Hoekstra should be declared persona non grata and urges the Canadian government to seek his removal due to his alleged interference in Canadian political affairs and undermining of the Canada-U.S. diplomatic relationship.

Lee Walker, the petitioner, emphasized that the widespread support indicates a significant concern among Canadians regarding Hoekstra’s alignment with President Trump’s policies, particularly in relation to Canadian sovereignty. She criticized Hoekstra for his remarks suggesting the annexation of Canada by the United States and the normalization of contentious rhetoric, highlighting the weight of an ambassador’s words and their potential real-world impacts.

The petition also calls for a review of U.S. diplomatic involvement in Canadian matters by a parliamentary committee and has captured the attention of the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, though they declined to provide a specific comment on the matter. With ongoing trade negotiations between the two countries, Walker noted that existing tensions necessitate a strong stance on upholding Canadian sovereignty.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May is set to present the petition in Parliament and expressed amazement at the level of public response, emphasizing the duty of MPs to address citizens’ concerns. Drawing a comparison to past diplomatic practices, May criticized Hoekstra’s approach as contrary to the traditional role of fostering relationships between countries. She highlighted the need for respectful dialogue and mutual understanding in diplomatic interactions.

The petition, which symbolizes a unified Canadian stance on sovereignty and diplomatic decorum, signals a firm stance against perceived diplomatic overreach and underscores the importance of maintaining respectful and constructive international relations.
