A Food Basics store will take over a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys area this autumn, resulting in the loss of jobs for several employees. Metro Inc. stated that the closure of the store on Wednesday is part of a decision to convert it to a Food Basics outlet to better cater to the local market demands.
The sudden announcement of the store’s closure came as a surprise to employees, including Justin Braganza, a long-time meat cutter at the location. Braganza, who has been with the store for over 30 years, was informed in May about the closure due to financial reasons, including increased rent and the store’s profitability challenges.
Metro confirmed that the decision to switch to a Food Basics store was based on market conditions and customer preferences rather than rent costs. The Southgate Metro employed 72 individuals, and according to the company, these workers are not eligible to transfer to other Metro locations. Instead, they are encouraged to apply for positions at the new Food Basics store.
Despite the collective agreement requiring the new Food Basics store to prioritize hiring former Southgate Metro employees, concerns remain among staff like Braganza. He expressed disappointment over the lack of job prospects at the new store, especially for specialized roles like meat cutters.
The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated enhanced options for affected workers, including job opportunities at the Food Basics store and improved severance benefits. Legal experts raised questions about the company’s decision to rebrand and potential challenges from the union regarding workforce shortage claims.
While uncertainties persist for the employees, negotiations between the union and the employer may lead to settlements that could address concerns and provide some resolution. However, the situation highlights the vulnerability of workers in such transitions, leaving them with limited recourse and uncertain futures.
