A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the death of a two-year-old girl under his care. Travis Ray Thompson, 27, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the tragic case of Jacklyn Schwingel, who died on May 2, 2022, shortly after Thompson had been entrusted with her care following the breakup with her mother.
Jacklyn’s mother had left her daughter with Thompson while she went to work, only to receive a distressing call from him just 25 minutes later, reporting an issue with the child. Upon her return, she found Jacklyn unresponsive with concerning physical symptoms.
Medical examination revealed that Jacklyn had sustained severe internal injuries, including a broken spine and abdominal bleeding, leading to her tragic death. It was determined that Thompson had inflicted deliberate and forceful harm on the toddler, causing irreversible damage.
During questioning, Thompson claimed ignorance about how Jacklyn had sustained her injuries, despite being the sole caretaker at the time. The State Attorney for the Fifth Judicial Circuit condemned Thompson’s actions, emphasizing that life imprisonment was a fitting punishment for such heinous acts.
In a separate case, Kerry and Michael Ives were convicted for the murder of their grandson, Ethan Ives-Griffiths, after subjecting him to prolonged abuse. The court sentenced the grandparents to lengthy prison terms for their crimes, while Ethan’s mother, Shannon Ives, also faced legal consequences for her role in the tragedy.
Ethan tragically passed away due to a severe head injury sustained at his grandparents’ residence, where he suffered neglect and mistreatment. The court heard disturbing details of the abuse inflicted on the helpless child, underscoring the need for justice in such cases of cruelty and neglect.
