Joe Cullen recently took to social media to criticize Mensur Suljovic, accusing the experienced darts player of dishonesty. Cullen, from Bradford, faced a disappointing loss against Suljovic in an intense second-round match at the World Darts Championship.
Suljovic made a stunning comeback after being a set down, ultimately triumphing 3-1 over Cullen at Alexandra Palace. Throughout the game, Cullen was visibly impatient, checking his watch sarcastically and whispering ‘hurry up’ to himself as the 53-year-old Austrian took his time preparing to throw.
While Suljovic is known for his slower pace compared to other players, Cullen, also known as ‘the Rockstar,’ grew increasingly frustrated with his opponent’s deliberate approach and prolonged celebrations. Tensions escalated during their post-match handshake, with Cullen expressing his discontent while Suljovic responded with laughter.
After exiting the stage, Cullen halted, turned back, and glared at Suljovic who was celebrating with the crowd. Cullen vented his anger on social media, stating, “If that’s darts, I don’t want any part of it! Always liked Mensur away from the board but that was plain for all to see! I don’t think I’m alone in feeling this way. The old guard may justify it as part of the game, but no matter how you phrase it – it’s CHEATING! That’s not darts.”
When questioned about Cullen’s outburst and whether he apologized for his slow play during the post-match press conference, Suljovic seemed confused. He responded, “I have never apologized to Joe Cullen in person. I play on that stage, so what’s his issue? I might say sorry to the referee, but to Joe Cullen? Never. Everyone plays differently.”
Further probed on the matter, Suljovic expressed, “I don’t understand his problem. What is it? Did I give him missed doubles and everything? I always play darts properly. Maybe I celebrate too much or show enthusiasm, but I like Joe Cullen. He is a very nice guy, but…”
In the upcoming round, Suljovic may face defending world champion Luke Littler. Littler, an 18-year-old, is set to compete against darts player and NHS area manager David Davies in the next match.
