A man violently invaded his neighbor’s house armed with a large knife and metal scaffolding pole. Shane Berry, aged 53, assaulted Mark Taylor after consuming nine pints of beer. The attack took place in Exminster, Devon, during the day, causing severe injuries to Mark, who required 24 staples in his head and 15 stitches in his hand.

Berry was recently sentenced to six years in prison at Exeter Crown Court for causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The incident stemmed from a long-standing dispute between the two neighboring households on a quiet street. Mark refuted claims made by Berry’s barrister in court, stating that there had been no threats made to Berry’s mother as alleged.

The conflict between the neighbors escalated due to minor issues such as boundary disputes, spotlights, shed planning permissions, and CCTV installations. Despite attempts at mediation, tensions continued to rise, leading to the violent outburst by Berry. Mark and his wife had limited contact with Berry and his family for nearly two years before the incident occurred.

The attack left Mark traumatized, and he emphasized that they had made efforts to resolve the disputes amicably. Berry’s aggression had been escalating over time, fueled by trivial matters that spiraled out of control. The violent incident shocked the community, prompting calls for increased security measures from residents.

Teign Housing intervened to address the escalating conflict between the neighbors, issuing warnings and attempting to defuse the situation. The court’s decision to convict Berry was seen as a step towards restoring peace in the neighborhood. Mark expressed gratitude for the support received and highlighted the need for improved security measures to prevent future incidents.

Amanda Nicholls, Director of Customer and Communities at Teign Housing, emphasized the seriousness with which they handle cases of anti-social behavior. She mentioned the collaborative efforts with the police to manage complex situations effectively. The outcome of the court case was welcomed as a step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents, with ongoing support offered to the affected parties.
