Keir Starmer has confirmed that Peter Mandelson will not be reinstated in any government role following his removal as the UK’s top diplomat in Washington. The decision came after revelations emerged about Mandelson’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein, leading to his dismissal as ambassador last month.
Mandelson, appointed as the UK’s ambassador to the US in December 2024, faced his third forced departure from a government position due to controversies. When asked about Mandelson’s potential political future, Starmer stated that there would be no government appointments for him and mentioned that Mandelson was already on leave from the House of Lords.
Additionally, it was disclosed last week that Mandelson would lose the Freedom of Hartlepool honor due to his association with Epstein. The search for a new ambassador to the US is ongoing as James Roscoe currently serves as the acting interim ambassador.
Regarding another figure, Michelle Mone, who has ties to a scandal involving PPE Medpro, Starmer mentioned that she is not currently active in the Lords and indicated there is a process to address the situation. Mone had her Tory whip removed in 2022 by former PM Rishi Sunak.
Baroness Mone’s link to the PPE Medpro scandal, which recently had to repay the government over £121 million, is a significant factor in her current political standing. Starmer emphasized the need for a thorough review of the situation and the processes involved in addressing it.
This development comes amidst ongoing changes within political circles, with Starmer navigating various challenges and decisions regarding key figures in the political landscape.
