Keir Starmer avoided addressing inquiries today regarding the potential awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump, a recognition the US President has been vocal about desiring.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister expressed relief over a breakthrough ceasefire agreement in Gaza, emphasizing the positive impact it could have on freeing hostages and halting the violence that has caused significant loss of life in the region.
During a press conference in Mumbai, India, Mr. Starmer commended President Trump for his involvement in the negotiations, which also included Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, leading to the ceasefire deal.
When asked about Trump’s eligibility for the Nobel Peace Prize, Starmer sidestepped the question but acknowledged the crucial role played by the US President in advancing the peace talks, emphasizing the need to move forward with implementing the agreement.
Earlier, Trump had expressed his belief that he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize but doubted he would be granted the honor.
Starmer also addressed queries about former Labour PM Tony Blair’s potential role in the Gaza peace plan, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the positive outcome rather than the individuals involved.
The PM underscored the significance of the breakthrough deal, highlighting the relief it would bring to hostages, their families, and civilians in Gaza who have endured immense suffering. He stressed the necessity of swift implementation and reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting the process in collaboration with US mediators.
