Hollywood star Anjelica Huston reveals sad cancer diagnosis that changed her outlook on life

Must read

Actor Anjelica Huston has revealed that she was diagnosed with cancer six years ago. She’s said it came as a “big shock” and that she’s now “proud” of how she has dealt with the experience, which has led to her making changes in her life.

Anjelica, now 73 – who’s known for her roles in films like the Witches (1990) and the Addams Family (1991) – has shared that she received the diagnosis in 2019. She’s said that it was after the release of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, in which she had a supporting role, in May that year.

The Oscar winner announced that she had a “bout with cancer” to People magazine recently. She did not disclose the type of cancer but told the outlet that she is now “in the clear,” with her said to still have regular scans.

Anjelica said that the diagnosis was a “very serious moment” for her but she “survived it” and is “proud” of herself. She described herself as having been “very lucky” and said that her doctors have been “wonderful” over the experience.

She also shared that it has changed her approach to life. Anjelica commented: “It came as a big shock, but it made me conscious of what I shouldn’t do, of places I shouldn’t go. One of those places was taking life too seriously.”

The acclaimed actor – who won her Academy Award for her performance in Prizzi’s Honor (1985) – explained that now when the opportunity presents itself she laughs. She added that she also tries not to “make a big deal out of things”.

It was revealed in the interview that Anjelica was told that she was ‘cancer free’ two years after the diagnosis. Speaking about how much it means to her, she told the outlet: “I’m at the four-year mark, and that means so much to me.”

She also discussed her decision to share her experience after keeping the diagnosis private for six years. Anjelica suggested that sometimes people don’t want to discuss it for “obvious reasons,” but that there’s “a lot to be said for talking about it” and “celebrating” having “come through”.

Anjelica – who described life as “tenuous” and “wonderful” – shared the news whilst promoting Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero. The three-part limited series aired in the UK last month but will be released in the US next week.

The actor – who played Lady Tressilian in the adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel of the same name – told the outlet that she doesn’t consider retirement. Angelica – whose enjoyed a decades-long career – said that she “can’t imagine” that and teased it would be “too much” for her.
