A specialist in body language has identified subtle cues that may suggest someone is being untruthful. Recent research has shown that individuals in the UK hide their genuine feelings up to three times a week. A survey of 2,000 participants revealed that 34% of Brits believe they have a strong ability to conceal their emotions, while 25% are confident in their ability to deceive without being detected.

On the other hand, a majority of two-thirds claim they can detect when others are lying, with signs such as excessive or minimal eye contact, nervous laughter, and restlessness being key indicators. These are often accompanied by changes in voice pitch, blushing, and sweating.

These behaviors align with the common signs that Brits acknowledge they display when being untruthful. However, expert Judi James, in collaboration with Lottoland, has pointed out that these signals do not always indicate dishonesty; they can actually suggest the opposite.

According to James, body language is not an exact science, and individuals exhibiting what may appear as lying traits could simply be truthful individuals feeling pressured to be believed. Both lying and proving honesty can trigger a stress response that manifests as similar non-verbal cues.

She further explained that TV shows like “The Traitors” illustrate this phenomenon well. Contestants striving to prove their loyalty may unintentionally appear more guilty than those who are lying.

A large portion of Brits believe it is essential to mask their emotions in public to avoid conflicts and uncomfortable situations. Some do this to spare others’ feelings, while others aim to maintain a professional demeanor, especially in a workplace setting.

A representative from Lottoland.co.uk emphasized that the ability to deceive is a valuable trait in poker players, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a neutral facial expression. The tactics used to hide emotions, such as fidgeting and avoiding eye contact, are also behaviors that people watch for to catch a liar. This collaboration with Judi James aims to gain insights from an expert on these observations.
