A recent survey of 1,000 university graduates highlighted that 80% of them wished they had been more informed about the realities of student life before embarking on their university journey. The alumni shared insights on essential items that facilitated their university experience, such as using a doorstop to foster a welcoming atmosphere and having earplugs for undisturbed sleep, particularly during Freshers’ Week.

Studies conducted by EXTRA have identified essential items for new students, such as a laundry basket to manage the inevitable pile of clothes and comfortable slippers to stay warm without cranking up the heating.

Additional recommendations included having flip flops for communal bathrooms and a supply of cold and flu remedies to combat the common fresher’s flu. Apart from physical preparations, many stressed the significance of mental preparedness.

One of the main challenges reported by university students, often catching them off guard, was managing social commitments in their initial year, with a third highlighting financial management as the most daunting adjustment.

A third of respondents expressed uncertainty about which fresher’s societies to join, while 31% felt anxious about forming new friendships.

A popular chewing gum brand collaborated with student wellbeing advocate, Ben West, to offer expert guidance on reducing anxiety during the initial weeks of university.

West stated: “These simple strategies were my go-to during my university days whenever I felt overwhelmed, aiding in pausing, resetting, and staying present. Even small actions like pausing, chewing gum, or taking a walk can be beneficial.

“Commencing university is a significant and thrilling milestone, and with a few handy techniques, you can minimize stress and fully embrace the experience.”

Engaging in deep breathing triggers the body’s relaxation response, promoting a sense of grounding. Allocate a peaceful space and dedicate a few minutes to deep breathing: inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for as long as possible, and repeat. This practice can reduce panic and enhance presence instantly.

Chewing gum serves as a simple, daily habit, offering familiarity during hectic days. Keep a pack in your bag or pocket, and when needed, chew a piece to experience the rhythmic motion.

While it may seem straightforward, physical movement triggers the release of endorphins in the brain, underscoring the benefits of outdoor activity. Take a stroll to quiet your mind and explore your new university surroundings, allowing the environment to divert your focus.
