A recent study suggests that instead of splurging on a luxury wellness retreat, engaging in just 15 minutes of daily exercise can have a more significant positive impact on mental health. Participants from the UK, US, and Australia who had previously attended wellness holidays were asked to incorporate a 15-minute movement break into their daily routine for one week. The results showed a 21% improvement in mental well-being, surpassing the benefits of expensive retreats.
The research, led by Dr. Brendon Stubbs from King’s College London and commissioned by ASICS, found that 71% of participants experienced reduced stress with daily movement. Additionally, 65% reported an uplift in mood, and 73% noted longer-lasting mental health benefits compared to their previous wellness vacations.
In response to the findings, ASICS has appointed Natasha Rothwell as its Everyday Escape Concierge to promote the message that wellness does not have to be costly or require extensive travel. Natasha emphasizes that simple activities like walking, stretching, or dancing can serve as everyday escapes that are accessible to everyone.
A global survey conducted by ASICS revealed that while people traveled an average of over 1,500km to attend wellness retreats, many did not meet their expectations, with benefits fading shortly after returning home. Dr. Brendon Stubbs highlighted the profound impact of short movement breaks on mental well-being, stating that exercise offers long-term benefits that surpass the temporary boost from a week-long retreat.
Participants expressed a preference for prioritizing movement for their well-being over future retreats, with 81% committing to continuing movement breaks. This study underscores the efficacy of incorporating regular exercise into daily routines for enhanced mental health.
