A mother of three provided crucial information to the police after being abducted, leading them to uncover a significant revelation.

Paige Birgfield, a 34-year-old single mother, juggled multiple jobs to support her children, engaging in activities with them and ensuring they felt secure by sharing her bed at night.

Following her second divorce, Paige found herself raising her eight-year-old daughter, Jess, along with her six and three-year-old sons, burdened with debts from her marriage and a mortgage to manage alone. Despite the financial challenges, she worked tirelessly with her preschool dance business and other occupations to make ends meet.

On June 28, 2007, Paige met her first husband, whom she had recently reconnected with after a decade of divorce, for an afternoon visit, marking the last time she was seen alive before disappearing. Her ex-husband was the last person she contacted, speaking to him a few miles from her residence around 9 p.m.

Concerned when Paige did not return home, the live-in nanny of her children alerted the authorities, initiating a search operation that failed to yield any leads in the local vicinity and nearby rivers in Colorado.

Three days after her disappearance, a passerby reported a burning car in an empty parking lot, which turned out to be Paige’s red vehicle, located two miles away from her home. Furthermore, some of Paige’s personal belongings, including her checkbook and driver’s license, were discovered on a highway 15 miles from the car.

Forensic analysis revealed the use of an accelerant to set the vehicle ablaze, with the driver’s seat adjusted for someone taller than Paige. Initially, both of Paige’s ex-husbands were suspects, but they were exonerated upon providing alibis. Subsequently, the investigation took a dramatic turn when authorities uncovered Paige’s involvement in an escort service, prompting a focus on potential clients linked to her disappearance.

Attention turned to Lester Ralph Jones, a 56-year-old married mechanic, who operated near the location where Paige’s car was found burning. Suspicion grew as surveillance footage captured Lester purchasing a disposable phone, with similarities to items the victim sold through her business.

Despite Lester’s history of violence, including a prior prison term for assault and attempted kidnapping, concrete evidence linking him to the crime was lacking, prolonging the investigation for five years until a breakthrough occurred.

In March 2012, skeletal remains were unearthed by a hiker 30 miles from Paige’s residence, positively identified through dental records. The circumstances surrounding her death remained inconclusive, although indications of skeletal injuries and the presence of duct tape at the scene raised suspicions. Additionally, items from Paige’s wallet were located on a road five miles away, hinting at a deliberate trail left behind.

In November 2014, Lester Ralph Jones was indicted on charges of murder and kidnapping, with bail set at £1.6 million. Following a trial in September 2016, where prosecutors alleged Lester’s motive stemmed from concealing his involvement with an escort from his spouse, a mistrial was declared due to a hung jury.

Subsequently, a second trial commenced in December of the same year, resulting in a guilty verdict for Lester, now 65, on charges of murder and kidnapping. He received a life sentence without the possibility of parole during the sentencing hearing.
