Shaun Murphy expressed frustration towards Matchroom for the scheduling of the Champion of Champions event following his recent participation in China’s International Championship. Despite only finding out about his match while returning from Nanjing, Murphy faced Lei Peifan in the tournament’s opener, resulting in a 4-1 defeat.
In a statement to ITV4, Murphy criticized Matchroom for what he perceived as disrespectful treatment, highlighting the lack of communication and the last-minute revelation of his match schedule. He emphasized feeling let down by the organization’s handling of the event, calling it unprofessional and disappointing.
While Murphy was placed in the opening day lineup, other players such as Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, who did not compete in the previous week’s International Championship, are scheduled to play later in the Champion of Champions event.
Matchroom responded to Murphy’s complaints by acknowledging his frustrations and emphasizing player priorities and fairness in group seeding. They assured a commitment to enhancing scheduling practices for future events.
In other matches on the opening day, Judd Trump secured a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu, advancing to face Lei later in the day. The following day’s play includes matchups like Kyren Wilson vs Jack Lisowski, Allen vs Ziao Xintong, Williams vs Burden, Selby vs Maguire, Robertson vs Ford, and Higgins vs Xiao Guodong.
