In a move that has left millions of laptops vulnerable to cyber threats, Microsoft ceased support for Windows 10 almost six months ago. This has resulted in a lack of crucial security updates for numerous devices, potentially exposing them to malware attacks. While some newer laptops can be updated to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s program, older PCs often do not meet the necessary system requirements, presenting users with a challenging dilemma.
Users facing this predicament can opt to continue using their unsupported laptops, purchase extended updates (ESUs) for a fee, or invest in a new device pre-installed with Windows 11. However, a new option has emerged for aging PCs to prolong their lifespan and prevent them from being discarded. Google has collaborated with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that rejuvenates older laptops with ChromeOS Flex software.
ChromeOS Flex is a lightweight operating system that can be installed on a variety of older computers, effectively transforming them into Chromebook-style devices. Once installed, users gain access to popular services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the need to purchase a new laptop.
Previously available as a free download from Google, ChromeOS Flex now comes with convenient USB kits designed to simplify the installation process. Users can even test the system directly from the USB drive before committing to a full installation. The USB kits have quickly become popular among enthusiasts, with current stock levels reported as depleted.
In a blog post, Google highlighted the significance of this initiative in light of the end of support for Windows 10, stating, “To offer another solution, Google is partnering with Back Market… a new ChromeOS Flex USB Kit is available on their site to help you install our fast, secure and free operating system to modernize the PC or Mac you already own.”
Priced at approximately £3, the kit includes a reusable USB stick that contributes to reducing electronic waste. Despite high demand, the item is currently out of stock on Back Market’s platform.
Beyond the immediate benefits for old laptops, Google emphasized the environmental advantages of ChromeOS Flex, noting that prolonging the use of existing devices helps reduce carbon emissions associated with manufacturing new laptops. Additionally, ChromeOS is touted to consume 19% less energy on average compared to other similar systems.
For those contemplating a transition, devices compatible with ChromeOS Flex offer a viable option.
