An injection of £84 million in funding is set to provide support to thousands of individuals facing the risk of homelessness during this winter. Housing Secretary Steve Reed emphasized the urgent need to address the issue, labeling it a “moral stain on our society” due to the prevalence of people sleeping rough or residing in inadequate temporary accommodations.

Charities have expressed appreciation for the much-needed financial aid, while also underlining the necessity for a comprehensive homelessness strategy that transcends temporary solutions. A significant portion of the funding, nearly £70 million, will be allocated to initiatives aimed at preventing rough sleeping by offering sustainable housing options and specialized support for physical and mental health challenges.

Moreover, a £11 million top-up will assist children and families living in temporary accommodations by covering essential needs like food, school transportation, and laundry services. An additional £3 million will be specifically directed towards aiding individuals experiencing homelessness and struggling with drug and alcohol dependency.

These efforts come at a critical time as the number of families enduring temporary accommodation has reached record levels, with close to 170,000 children affected. Recent government statistics released in July indicated a surge in the number of households residing in temporary accommodations in England, reaching a new high of 131,140 by the end of March 2025. The count of children in temporary housing stood at 169,050 in March, marking a year-on-year increase and representing the highest figure since data collection began in 1998.

The Museum of Homelessness reported a disturbing 1,611 deaths of homeless individuals in 2024, including 11 children. Housing Secretary Steve Reed reiterated the government’s commitment to combatting homelessness, stating, “Homelessness is a moral stain on our society.”

St Mungo’s, a homelessness charity, acknowledged the significance of the funding boost but stressed the necessity of a comprehensive plan to effectively tackle the homelessness crisis. Lord John Bird, founder of the Big Issue, emphasized the need for holistic support services addressing the root causes of homelessness, urging the implementation of a robust strategy rather than temporary fixes.
