A fan of football who raised more than £260,000 for charity by selling samosas. A mother who plunged into the ocean to rescue a 10-year-old boy from drowning. And a five-year-old girl whose remarkable bravery aided her in rebuilding her life after losing both legs.

These are only three of the exceptional winners honored at the 2024 Pride of Britain Awards. Selected from numerous public nominations, these ordinary heroes were recognized at a glamorous London event co-hosted by Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman.

Then came an unforgettable surprise. P&O Cruises, the new primary sponsor for the Pride of Britain Awards, generously provided each of the 12 winners with a cruise vacation – an opportunity to enjoy a wonderful, memory-filled trip with their families.

We caught up with three heroes who embarked on a 14-night Caribbean voyage aboard Britannia, exploring eight sun-drenched islands and indulging in top-notch entertainment.

Aiyla Mota, Young Braveheart

Shortly before her fourth birthday, Aiyla Mota fell ill with what appeared to be a typical childhood infection. Within days, it developed into sepsis, resulting in multiple organ failure and necessitating the amputation of both her legs and five fingers to save her life.

Now aged five, Aiyla has made an incredible recovery. Her bravery and optimism have astounded those around her, earning her a Pride of Britain Award and making her one of the youngest recipients ever.

Her proud mother, Eulanda, 28, from Middlesex, comments: “Aiyla has always had a lively personality, and despite her ordeal, she has not lost that spark. If anything, she is now even more spirited, confident, and vivacious. She’s like Aiyla multiplied by 100!

“My grandmother says it’s as if she is aware that she has been given a second chance at life and is making the most of it.”

After being awarded her prize by P&O Cruises, Aiyla and her mother embarked on a Caribbean journey along with Aiyla’s grandmother, Trisha, and Eulanda’s partner, Louis. They relished exploring some of Britannia’s 27 eateries and bars, eight live entertainment venues, and four swimming pools.

“The cruise was an amazing holiday, and I am truly thankful to P&O Cruises for such an incredible opportunity,” says Eulanda. “It was our first cruise experience, and we weren’t sure what to expect.

“One thing that surprised us was how, at times, you forgot you were on a ship because there was so much to do.

“Aiyla particularly enjoyed the kids’ club, all the entertainment, and staying up late! And during our island visits, she adored the beaches and a rainforest excursion.

“For me, the stop at Barbados was particularly meaningful. My father and grandparents hailed from there, but I had never visited. Stepping onto the land, I felt incredibly blessed to be there and to connect with my family’s roots. It was a profound experience for me.”
