Wiltshire Police issued an urgent update following a disruption in their 101 phone line and delays in handling 999 calls. The police force attributed the issue to technical problems in their control room. While 999 emergency calls are being answered with slight delays, the 101 telephone service is currently unavailable.

Nevertheless, the police website’s 101 function remains operational, and individuals are encouraged to use it to report non-emergency crimes. Wiltshire Police assured the public that efforts are underway to restore the telephone service promptly.

In a statement, Wiltshire Police acknowledged the technical challenges affecting their control room, resulting in the 101 telephone service outage. They reassured the public that emergency 999 calls are being answered, albeit with delays.

Earlier this year, concerns were raised about ambulance call handlers facing high levels of sick leave and resignations due to increased public frustration over 999 delays and extended NHS ambulance wait times. Data obtained under Freedom of Information laws indicated that call handlers take significantly more sick leave compared to the national average.

The demanding nature of the work has led to burnout among staff, with a notable percentage leaving their positions. Call handlers described the emotional toll of dealing with distressing situations during long shifts, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by frontline emergency responders.

Recent technical issues with the emergency 999 service in the UK prompted a call for using alternative emergency numbers like 101 for police and fire emergencies and 111 for medical emergencies. BT, the service provider, apologized for the disruption and assured the public that measures were in place to address the issue and prevent future occurrences.
