Britain’s billionaires have significantly increased their wealth in the past year, contrasting with the financial struggles faced by many ordinary citizens. A report by Oxfam reveals that the richest individuals have seen their fortunes surge by £11 billion, translating to over £30 million daily. Remarkably, the combined wealth of 56 billionaires now equals that of 27 million other Britons.

This trend of expanding wealth among the ultra-rich extends globally, as Oxfam’s findings show that the world’s billionaires now possess a record total of £13.6 trillion, boosted by nearly £1.9 trillion over the last year alone. The report also points out that the super-rich wield growing political influence and media control, impacting civil liberties and legal systems worldwide, while nearly half of the global population grapples with poverty and food insecurity.

The release of Oxfam’s report coincides with the Davos economic forum, where the global elite convene annually. Another study by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation indicates that over 14 million people in the UK live in poverty, despite the average UK billionaire experiencing a £231 million wealth increase in the past year. The report underscores the exacerbation of inequality and its detrimental effects on democracies, with a marked surge in billionaire wealth coinciding with policies favoring the ultra-rich, exemplified by the Trump administration.

Oxfam highlights the pervasive ownership of major media and social media companies by billionaires, including influential figures like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. The charity’s experts assert that deregulation and corporate profit-driven policies have fueled the exponential wealth growth among the super-rich, further entrenching societal disparities and undermining democratic principles.

Calling for systemic change, Oxfam emphasizes the global outcry against a system skewed in favor of billionaires, with protests erupting in various countries demanding equitable distributions of power and resources. The charity advocates for wealth taxes as a means to address the widening wealth gap and promote economic fairness.
