A consultant epidemiologist is advising eligible individuals in the UK to take action to safeguard themselves against potential illnesses during the upcoming winter season. This advice comes in response to a recent report from the UK Health Security Agency indicating an increase in cases of both COVID-19 and flu.

Dr. Jamie Lopez Bernal, in a statement shared on the UKHSA platform, emphasized the importance of vaccination for those eligible. The latest surveillance report for the 2025/26 season highlights a rise in flu and COVID-19 positivity rates, underlining the critical need for optimal protection through vaccination.

The NHS national booking system has now opened for all eligible groups to schedule appointments for flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. Vaccines for COVID-19 are specifically designed to shield against the virus, particularly for individuals at a higher risk of severe illness.

While not everyone may require a booster shot, the NHS typically offers additional doses to individuals more susceptible to serious complications. Concerning winter COVID-19 vaccination, specific groups are being targeted to ensure comprehensive protection.

Concurrently, flu vaccinations aim to safeguard vulnerable populations from influenza. The UKHSA previously highlighted six key groups eligible for flu shots starting September 1, with an additional six groups becoming eligible from October 1.

Individuals in the UK can verify their eligibility for COVID-19 and flu vaccines using the NHS app. These vaccinations are commonly administered at GP surgeries, selected pharmacies, maternity clinics, and care facilities. Health and social care workers may also receive vaccinations at their workplaces.

Furthermore, individuals can receive a flu jab simultaneously with the COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccinations like shingles. While the RSV vaccine is typically administered separately, doctors may administer it alongside other vaccines if necessary.

As of October 1, the NHS had already dispatched over 12 million flu jab invitations via email, with more invitations distributed through the NHS App, text messages, and letters throughout the month. Eligible individuals are encouraged to book their appointments promptly without waiting for an invitation.

For additional information, individuals are advised to visit the NHS website for comprehensive details on vaccination options and eligibility.
