A significant shift is on the horizon for communication in UK households as they prepare to transition from traditional copper-wire phone lines to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology starting in January next year. VoIP utilizes internet connections for phone calls, offering improved call quality, reliability, and additional features like spam call protection and call forwarding.
Despite industry warnings and an extended deadline until January 31, 2027, a recent report from Phonely reveals that 58.7% of UK adults over 50 are unaware of the impending shutdown of traditional landlines. This lack of awareness could lead to a rush of last-minute upgrades in 2026, potentially causing issues such as equipment shortages, installation delays, and added pressure on telecom providers.
Phonely emphasizes the importance of understanding the upcoming switch from analogue landlines, urging individuals to proactively address the change rather than waiting until the last minute. With the 2027 deadline looming, delaying the transition may result in unforeseen challenges.
Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, highlights the concerns raised by these changes, especially for older individuals who rely on landlines for social connections and safety. Residents are encouraged to reach out to their telephone providers to explore the available options for transitioning to VoIP and ensure they receive necessary support, particularly if they rely on telecare alarm systems.
The switch involves retiring the UK’s copper-based PSTN network in favor of digital VoIP services, meaning that traditional analogue landlines will cease to function after January 31, 2027. Broadband connections will be used for making calls, requiring households to have compatible phones for the new system.
While many younger households have already embraced mobile phones, a significant number of individuals over 50, particularly in rural areas, still heavily rely on their landlines for daily communication, emergencies, and telecare alarm systems. Telephone providers are expected to guide customers through the transition process, ensuring a seamless switch without additional costs in most cases.
However, concerns persist over internet access for older consumers who are not online. Efforts are underway to find solutions for those without internet access ahead of the 2027 deadline. Individuals who have apprehensions about the change are advised to engage with their phone providers to discuss available alternatives and ensure a smooth transition.
