In another U.S. city, Donald Trump has directed troops to utilize ‘full force’ against demonstrators. He justified this action by stating he was targeting “domestic terrorists,” with the deployment intended for individuals protesting the conduct and often aggressive methods of immigration officials in Portland, Oregon.

Through his Truth Social platform, Trump declared the decision as essential to safeguard Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities, which he claimed were facing attacks by Antifa and other domestic terrorists. Antifa, originally an abbreviation for anti-fascists, has been misrepresented by the Trump administration as an actual organized group.

Trump has labeled Antifa as a ‘domestic terror’ group, sparking concerns that he may use this classification to suppress protests against him and his policies with force. Details such as the timing of the deployment and the specific troops involved were not immediately provided by the White House.

Earlier threats by Trump to deploy the National Guard in Chicago did not materialize. The expected deployment of about 150 troops in Memphis, Tennessee, is significantly fewer than the forces sent to Washington, D.C., during Trump’s crackdown and to Los Angeles in response to immigration demonstrations.

Requests for information from Pentagon officials went unanswered. Trump has heightened efforts to combat what he perceives as the “radical left” following the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, deploying the National Guard and active-duty Marines to Los Angeles and the nation’s capital as part of his law enforcement actions.

The ICE facility in Portland has been a focal point of frequent protests, sometimes escalating into violent confrontations. Federal agents have sustained injuries, and several protesters have been charged with assault. The Department of Homeland Security denounced the erecting of a guillotine at a recent demonstration as “unhinged behavior.”

Trump, during comments in the Oval Office, hinted at an upcoming operation against protesters in Portland, denouncing them as “professional agitators and anarchists.” In September, he likened living in Portland to “living in hell” and contemplated sending in federal troops to address crime, similar to his threats regarding other cities like Chicago and Baltimore.

Portland’s mayor, Keith Wilson, stated that he neither requested nor required federal intervention, emphasizing the city’s commitment to protecting freedom of expression while addressing occasional violence and property damage. In Tennessee, Memphis prepared for an influx of National Guard troops to bolster efforts to combat crime, as announced by Republican Governor Bill Lee.
