Imogen Simmonds, a prominent triathlon athlete, expressed immense relief at avoiding a doping suspension despite a positive test for a banned substance. The 32-year-old was initially sidelined by the International Testing Agency (ITA) earlier this year following a positive result for ligandrol, a prohibited drug known for its muscle growth and performance-enhancing effects in and out of competition.
However, a ‘no guilt or negligence’ ruling was recently issued after a thorough investigation, allowing Simmonds to resume competing. In a social media post, Simmonds shared her relief over the ITA’s decision and clarified that the presence of Ligandrol in her sample was due to inadvertent contamination through intimate contact with her partner, who was consuming supplements containing the banned substance without her knowledge.
The ITA confirmed that no fault or negligence was attributed to Simmonds for the adverse analytical finding, and no period of ineligibility was imposed. Consequently, she is now cleared to participate in competitions without any disqualifications.
While the case can still be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Simmonds is focused on returning to triathlon events. With a career boasting 10 victories and a previous seventh-place ranking in the PTO’s World standings in 2024, Simmonds is eager to make a comeback after a recent fourth-place finish at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in New Zealand.
