An easyJet traveler shared her experience of challenging the airline’s fine for an oversized bag.
Louise Machin was surprised and puzzled when she was charged €58 (£51) by easyJet upon returning from Chania Airport in Crete for her supposedly oversized suitcase, despite her prior careful measurements. After reaching out to the bag manufacturer upon her return, easyJet refunded the fee upon confirmation that her bag met their requirements.
Ms. Machin, a 59-year-old resident of Crystal Palace, south London, is not the only one facing wrongful oversize cabin bag fines. Consumer group Which? highlighted issues with official bag sizers at some airports, causing travelers to be unfairly penalized.
Travelers flying with budget airlines have become accustomed to double-checking bag dimensions allowed onboard. However, discrepancies with official bag sizers at check-in desks or boarding gates have led to unwarranted fines.
Ms. Machin, a freelance film and TV sales director and project manager, encountered the issue during a trip to Crete in April. Despite ensuring her bag complied with regulations, she faced a challenge during the return journey at Chania Airport, where ground staff insisted her bag was oversized.
After proving her bag’s compliance with easyJet’s standards through the manufacturer, Cabin Max, Ms. Machin successfully secured a refund from the airline. Which? noted similar instances of passengers being wrongly fined for minor bag size infractions on various low-cost carriers.
The advice given is to appeal fees at the gate if travelers believe their bag is within the permitted size. Despite easyJet claiming no faults with sizers at Chania Airport, they refunded Ms. Machin and apologized for the inconvenience, emphasizing their commitment to addressing customer feedback.
