A young girl endured severe abuse at the hands of her own mother in a distressing cycle of physical, emotional, and sexual mistreatment, described as the most extreme case of child abuse ever witnessed by authorities. Tragically, the six-year-old victim was ultimately killed by her mother, leaving both relatives and the public in shock over the heartbreaking loss.

The tragic incident occurred in November 1995 in Manhattan, New York City, where Elisa Izquierdo, a beloved child by her father, suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage caused by her mother, Awilda Lopez, following a period of sustained abuse dating back to 1994 and 1995.

Born to a crack cocaine-addicted mother at Woodhull Hospital in New York on February 11, 1989, Elisa was initially in the custody of her father, Gustavo Izquierdo, who cherished her deeply, referring to her as his “princess” and celebrating her birthdays with love and grand gestures. However, circumstances led to Elisa being returned to her mother’s care, with devastating outcomes as child welfare services missed multiple opportunities to intervene despite clear signs of prolonged abuse.

Elisa, once likened to a modern-day Cinderella due to the care and attention she received from her loving father and even garnering the friendship of Prince Michael of Greece, saw her life take a tragic turn when she was placed under the permanent guardianship of her mother and stepfather, Carlos Lopez, leading to horrific abuse and her ultimate demise.

Withdrawn from her private school after her father’s passing, Elisa displayed concerning physical and emotional symptoms that went unnoticed by authorities despite reports of her mistreatment. Neighbors attested to hearing her cries of pain and pleas for mercy, yet welfare actions were not taken. Elisa endured unimaginable cruelty, including physical violence, forced consumption of her own waste, burns, sexual abuse, and degrading treatment by her drug-addicted caregivers.

Following a distressing call from Lopez reporting Elisa’s critical condition, emergency services were summoned, revealing the gruesome extent of the child’s injuries, leading to Lopez’s confession of heinous acts of violence against her daughter. An autopsy confirmed the extent of abuse suffered by Elisa, prompting an official to label it as the most severe case of child abuse witnessed in 22 years of service.

Awilda Lopez pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 15 years to life imprisonment, with welfare services facing criticism for their failures in protecting Elisa. Despite a denied parole in 2010, Lopez was granted parole on April 19, 2022, sparking controversy over the release of a mother convicted of the brutal murder of her innocent six-year-old daughter.
