LIV Golf professional Tom McKibbin credits his record-breaking round at the Hong Kong Open to his drive to qualify for prestigious events like the Masters and the Open. Despite advice from fellow Ulsterman Rory McIlroy to join the Saudi-backed tour, McKibbin opted to pursue other opportunities.
Having secured a top-10 finish in the Race to Dubai last season and a PGA Tour playing card, McKibbin earned over $5.7 million in his debut LIV season. Currently ranked 109th worldwide, he seeks a chance to compete in the Majors next year, with the Hong Kong Open offering a pathway to Augusta and Royal Birkdale for the top non-exempt player alongside a $2 million prize fund.
Expressing his motivation to perform well, McKibbin emphasized the significance of the opportunities available at such events. His decision to adopt an aggressive playing style paid off with a remarkable opening round score of 60, setting a new personal best in his professional career.
In a bold move, McKibbin turned professional in 2021 and achieved success by becoming the youngest Irish winner on the DP World Tour since McIlroy. Joining Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team for a reported $4 million marked a significant milestone in his career.
Despite concerns raised by McIlroy about jeopardizing his chances in the Majors and Ryder Cup, McKibbin remained focused on the benefits of consistent competition. With aspirations to play alongside top professionals, McKibbin embraced the challenge of competing on the international stage.
Notably, McKibbin’s performance at the Hong Kong Open surpassed previous records, with his impressive score overshadowing past achievements by other players. The tournament drew a strong field of 33 LIV players, with only a select few already exempt for the Masters.
Looking ahead, upcoming events like the Australian Open and the South African Open offer further opportunities for LIV players to secure coveted spots in the Masters. Additionally, the Hong Kong Open plays a pivotal role in the International Series Rankings on the Asian Tour, providing a pathway for top performers to earn invitations to LIV Golf’s prestigious competitions.
