As the current academic year kicks off, numerous students are immersing themselves in a novel educational experience that not only shapes their learning but also impacts their dietary habits and overall growth.

Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools is an innovative program designed to supply millions of portions of nutritious food to schools with a high proportion of students receiving free meals. This initiative aims to enhance children’s well-being and academic performance.

One of the participating schools, Ark Putney Academy in southwest London, recently enjoyed a special visit from actor and comedian Babatunde Aléshé. Babatunde engaged the students in a lively session on the importance of consuming five portions of fruits and vegetables daily, sparking excitement among the young learners.

Launched in 2024, the Fruit & Veg for Schools initiative distributed over 10.8 million healthy servings to 411 schools in its inaugural year. This year, the program has expanded to over 500 schools, ensuring that each child receives at least one piece of fresh produce daily.

Feedback from teachers involved in the program indicates a significant improvement in classroom behavior, focus, and energy levels among students. The positive impact of Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools on young individuals is evident, with all teachers agreeing that it has positively influenced the lives of the students it has reached.

Babatunde, reflecting on his personal experience with healthy eating, emphasizes the filling and energizing nature of fruits and vegetables, which can sustain students through their academic endeavors and playtime.

The program offers a variety of items such as bananas, blueberries, avocados, and spinach, which can be incorporated into school breakfast clubs or healthy tuck shops. This initiative aligns with Tesco Stronger Starts, which aims to support schools and community groups by providing essential food and activity resources to improve children’s well-being.

Babatunde envisions a lasting impact from Fruit & Veg for Schools, emphasizing the educational aspect of teaching children the benefits of different fruits and vegetables. By promoting healthy choices, the program encourages young individuals to make informed dietary decisions.

In addition to the nutritional benefits, the program has also had a positive emotional impact. For instance, in one school, appointing children as “fruit monitors” improved their confidence and emotional well-being, offering them a sense of responsibility and accomplishment.

Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad acknowledges the program’s success in enhancing children’s access to fresh produce and emphasizes the importance of expanding it to reach more young individuals in underprivileged communities.

With an increasing number of schools participating in the initiative, Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools is not just providing meals; it is sowing the seeds for a healthier future for children across the UK.
