A young woman escaped a serious car accident by climbing over her injured companion after crashing the BMW she received as a birthday gift while driving recklessly at nearly triple the speed limit. Chloe Leech, then 19, had acquired the car on the same day of the tragic collision and had taken it for a joyride along the coast. Engaging in a dangerous race with another vehicle on her birthday, she lost control while overtaking another car, causing the BMW to roll over multiple times before finally coming to a stop in a field.
Following the crash, one of the passengers, whose identity remains undisclosed, sustained a fractured spine, while another passenger also suffered injuries. Subsequently, Leech, residing in Newington Drive, North Shields, received a suspended prison sentence. On January 9, 2023, she had obtained the BMW 116 and later that day met with her friend to celebrate her birthday and flaunt her new car.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Leech was speeding on the way to the coast, with her friend recounting her boastful remarks about exceeding the speed limit. Upon reaching South Beach in Blyth, encounters with other individuals escalated the show-off behavior. As Leech left the car park, a VW Golf began following her, as reported by ChronicleLive.
The prosecution highlighted that an impromptu “race” ensued as they drove back along the coast. Making a stop at St Mary’s Lighthouse to meet two male friends, Leech engaged in further displays of speed and bravado towards the Golf. The situation intensified as they headed back towards Blyth, with Leech’s female friend expressing concerns and urging her to slow down. Despite the warnings, Leech continued to drive aggressively, even activating the sports plus mode of the vehicle. The reckless driving culminated in a high-speed pursuit on the A193 Blyth Road, where witnesses observed Leech tailgating and overtaking at excessive speeds.
In the aftermath of the crash, Leech’s friend alleged that she had escaped the car by climbing over her, leaving her trapped inside. Despite Leech denying this claim, the consequences were severe, with one male passenger sustaining a fractured spine and facial injuries, while the female companion suffered pain in several body parts and multiple dental fractures.
In a poignant victim impact statement, the woman described the traumatic moments of the crash and the fear of being trapped inside the vehicle. Expressing gratitude towards the strangers who offered assistance, she detailed the ongoing physical and emotional challenges she faced post-accident. The male victim also shared the difficulties he encountered, including losing his job due to the injuries sustained.
Leech, now 21 years old with no prior convictions, pleaded guilty to charges related to the incident, leading to a suspended prison sentence, community service, and a driving ban. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense, highlighting Leech’s inexperience and reckless driving behavior. The defense maintained that Leech did not climb over the victim as alleged and contested some aspects of the prosecution’s case.
