A recent survey of more than 2,000 adults aged 50 and above has unveiled their ultimate wish list of experiences, as they embrace a “now or never” mentality post-reaching this significant age milestone. On average, individuals in this age group currently have seven aspirations on their bucket lists, having already accomplished three since turning 50.
The significance of bucket lists has notably increased for a third of respondents since hitting the age of 50, with over half acknowledging the preciousness of time and a strong desire to compensate for lost opportunities. Interestingly, many individuals express a newfound sense of adventure compared to their younger years in their 30s and 40s.
Conducted by Newmedica in conjunction with National Eye Health Week, the study highlights popular bucket list aspirations, including witnessing the Northern Lights, embarking on a journey aboard the Orient Express, and exploring all seven continents.
Among the common goals are learning a new language, experiencing a helicopter ride, mastering a musical instrument, soaring over picturesque landscapes in a hot air balloon, and swimming with dolphins.
Dr. Reena Dave, a consultant ophthalmologist at an eye health clinic, commended the enthusiasm and ambition displayed by individuals in their 50s and beyond, remarking on their zest for life.
She emphasized the current trend of older generations being healthier, more connected, and eager to pursue experiences that were once deemed unattainable.
A significant portion of respondents believe that achieving their bucket list goals contributes to their overall well-being. However, concerns about potential health issues in the future, such as joint problems, decreased energy levels, and deteriorating eyesight, loom over their plans.
Dr. Reena highlighted the importance of addressing health issues promptly, particularly eye-related conditions, to ensure individuals can continue pursuing their dreams and experiences.
According to the survey results, a third of participants have undergone procedures like cataract surgery or laser treatment to safeguard their vision and continue checking off items from their bucket lists.
Dr. Reena Dave from Newmedica, a provider of advanced eye care services for both NHS and private patients, advised individuals to promptly address any vision-related concerns to maintain a fulfilling life.
She recommended seeking professional guidance and exploring treatment options to make informed decisions tailored to individual needs and preferences.
