Police in Steinbach, Manitoba, are cautioning individuals about overpayment scams following a charity’s encounter with a scammer who sent a counterfeit donation check, asserted an accidental overpayment, and requested a refund of thousands of dollars.
Michelle Neufeld, the president of Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue, disclosed that the organization was almost ensnared in an overpayment scam last spring. An individual identifying as “Kevin Vance Owens” initiated contact via email in April inquiring about the donation procedure and expressed interest in donating a substantial sum by check.
After receiving and depositing the check, Kevin claimed that his assistant mistakenly sent $4,000 instead of the intended $2,000, with the surplus meant for another entity. Insistent on receiving a tax receipt, he pressured the charity to refund half the amount. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the check was fraudulent, and the organization thankfully avoided falling victim to the scam.
Despite not suffering any financial loss, Neufeld mentioned that they considered adding the scammer’s name to a sponsorship plaque due to the substantial sum involved. Moving forward, the charity plans to await check clearance before issuing tax receipts.
Steinbach RCMP Staff Sgt. Mike Maxwell highlighted an increase in scam reports, particularly overpayment schemes. Fraudsters often employ tactics to rush victims into hasty decisions, including creating a false sense of urgency. Maxwell advised individuals to remain cautious, seek guidance from authorities or financial institutions, and refrain from complying with unusual payment requests.
Earl Funk, the mayor of Steinbach and owner of Earl’s Meat Market, recounted a recent cyberscam that led to the loss of thousands of dollars for his small business. An email purportedly from Funk requested an electronic deposit for an invoice payment, a departure from the usual check payment procedure. Despite efforts to stop the payment after realizing the deception, a portion of the funds was successfully transferred, resulting in a significant financial setback.
Feeling violated by the incident, Funk emphasized the importance of implementing stricter payment protocols and seeking approval before transactions are processed. The business has since bolstered its security measures to prevent future occurrences of cybercrime.
In conclusion, these incidents serve as reminders for organizations and individuals to exercise vigilance against fraudulent schemes, verify payment details thoroughly, and promptly report suspicious activities to authorities.
