Actress Sofia Vergara had to miss the Emmy Awards on Sunday due to a sudden medical emergency she experienced on her way to the event. The 53-year-old Modern Family star was preparing to attend the ceremony at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theatre when she suffered an allergic reaction, leading her to go to the emergency room instead. As a result, she couldn’t walk the red carpet and her evening took an unexpected turn.

Vergara took to Instagram to explain her absence, posting a photo showing her swollen left eye and expressing her regret for missing the Emmys. She shared additional images of herself in a hospital bed and a video of her rinsing her eye in a water fountain. Originally scheduled to present an award during the ceremony, Vergara’s absence meant comedian Nate Bargatze stepped in as host.

Supportive messages poured in from fans, with many expressing their well wishes for Vergara’s speedy recovery. Meanwhile, other notable presenters at the event included Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jude Law, Jason Bateman, Jennifer Coolidge, Colman Domingo, and Tina Fey. Another anticipated appearance that didn’t happen was actor Eric Dane, who, after revealing his ALS diagnosis, was absent from the show despite being scheduled to present.

Dane had disclosed his diagnosis earlier in the year, expressing gratitude for his family’s support and signaling his intention to continue working. The Emmy Awards saw successes for various shows, with Noah Wyle’s medical drama The Pitt winning Outstanding Drama Series, along with Seth Rogan’s comedy The Studio and UK TV drama Adolescence starring Stephen Graham also earning recognition.
