Skate Canada made an announcement on Wednesday revealing that Mike Slipchuk will be stepping down from his position as high-performance director after the 2026-27 season, marking the end of his 20-year tenure in the role. Slipchuk joined Skate Canada in 2006 and during his leadership, Canadian figure skaters achieved notable success by securing a total of 10 Olympic and 24 world championship medals.
Noteworthy achievements under Slipchuk’s guidance include Canada’s triumph at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, where the team clinched four Olympic medals. Particularly, ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, along with the skaters in the team event, secured gold medals. The gold medal earned by Virtue and Moir distinguished them as the most decorated Olympic figure skaters in history, with a tally of three gold medals and two silver medals.
Despite these victories, Canada’s recent Olympic performances have been less successful, with no medals obtained in Beijing in 2022 and only one bronze medal won earlier this year in Milan Cortina by Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier in the ice dance category.
Over the past two decades, Canada has produced a string of world champions across various disciplines. Notable achievements include Patrick Chan’s consecutive men’s world titles from 2011 to 2013 and Virtue and Moir’s three gold medals. The most recent world champions from Canada were pairs skaters Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in 2024.
Skate Canada has confirmed that Slipchuk will continue to be involved in an advisory capacity post his resignation, assisting in the transition to a new high-performance director. In a statement, Slipchuk expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead Skate Canada’s high-performance program, emphasizing the privilege of working alongside exceptional athletes and coaches. He highlighted the profound impact of witnessing Canadian athletes achieve podium success with their medals and the Canadian flag draped around them.
