Maria Branyas Morera, who lived to the age of 117 years and 168 days until her passing in August 2024, underwent various biological sample collections by scientists aiming to uncover the secrets of extreme longevity. The results of this study have now been published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine.

Researchers found that despite showing typical signs of aging at a molecular level, Maria was remarkably free from major age-related illnesses and had a biological age that was around 23 years younger than her chronological age of 117. Her genetic makeup included variations that shielded her from common age-related conditions like inflammation.

In comparison to both her peers and the general population, Maria’s epigenome and microbiome profiles resembled those of younger individuals more than her contemporaries, possibly influenced by genetic factors or her personal lifestyle choices.

According to experts, the data indicates that Maria’s exceptional longevity may be attributed to her cells exhibiting behaviors akin to those of younger cells. The extent to which this was influenced by genetics versus lifestyle factors remains uncertain. For example, Maria’s consumption of significant amounts of yogurt, known to correlate with lower body weight and reduced risk of type two diabetes, could have played a role in her healthy aging.

The researchers suggest that Maria’s continued well-being in old age challenges the notion that aging inevitably leads to declining health. They propose further studies involving larger groups of individuals who have reached advanced ages to explore the effects of lifestyle modifications such as dietary changes, exercise, and metabolic interventions on longevity.

Maria, born in San Francisco in 1907 and later relocating to Spain at the age of eight, defied the odds by reaching 117 years. While the number of centenarians is increasing, surpassing the 110-year milestone remains a rare accomplishment, with those exceeding 110 being dubbed supercentenarians.

Maria, recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest person, attributed her longevity to a combination of habits and values including order, tranquility, strong relationships, nature connection, emotional stability, positivity, and avoiding toxic influences. She abstained from alcohol and cigarettes, consumed yogurt daily, and had a diet rich in fruits and vegetables while maintaining an active lifestyle.

Acknowledging the role of luck and genetics in her long life, Maria’s positive outlook and healthy habits were key to her remarkable journey into extraordinary old age.
