In the aftermath of securing a spot at the World Cup for Scotland, Andy Robertson revealed his inner turmoil. Despite gearing up for a pivotal match, Robertson found himself consumed by thoughts of his ex-Liverpool teammate, Diogo Jota.

Expressing his emotional struggle, Robertson admitted, “I’ve tried to conceal it, but I’ve been deeply affected. Given my age, this could potentially be my final opportunity to participate in the World Cup. The image of my friend Diogo Jota lingered in my mind. We frequently discussed the World Cup. He missed out previously due to injury, and I missed out when Scotland failed to qualify. Our conversations always revolved around the prospect of experiencing the World Cup together.”

“I faced a personal challenge earlier in my room. I believe I managed to mask it from my teammates. I am certain he is watching over me with a smile. Throughout the day, he never left my thoughts.”

Robertson is not the only one struggling with the loss of his close friend. Several of his Liverpool comrades have shown signs of detachment, lack of focus, and diminished drive this season. Particularly, Mo Salah has been notably subdued compared to his former self.

The tragic passing of Jota in a car accident in July continues to weigh heavily at Anfield, where the club is committed to honoring and commemorating one of its beloved players.

His designated seat in the Anfield dressing room remains unoccupied, bearing his name above it. The same tribute extends to his spot at the training ground, with his name featured on match programs as well.

The message is clear: Jota’s memory will endure. Those who knew him in football attest that the Portuguese was not only a remarkable player but also a remarkable individual.

For individuals like Robertson, the constant reminders of Jota’s absence may hinder their ability to move forward and come to terms with a future without him.

Everyone copes with grief differently, and Robertson deserves recognition for his openness and sincerity in expressing his ongoing sentiments.

It is a welcome change to witness a top-tier footballer speak candidly from the heart. Robertson’s profound connection with Jota left him profoundly affected, leading him to attend Jota’s funeral in Gondomar, near Porto.

While life progresses at varying paces for individuals, Liverpool’s struggle to replicate their previous season’s success could partly stem from the emotional impact of losing a key figure like Jota.
