In a nighttime aerial onslaught that lasted for hours, Russia launched numerous missiles and drones on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and its surrounding areas, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 individuals, as per officials’ reports on Thursday.
The recent escalation in ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv by Moscow’s forces has exploited Ukraine’s limited supply of U.S.-made Patriot air defense interceptors, which are the only weapons capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in Ukraine’s arsenal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged nations to send more Patriot interceptors to Ukraine. However, global stockpiles are running low due to ongoing conflicts such as the Iran war and Ukraine’s prolonged battle against Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The overnight assault by Russia also involved the use of cruise missiles and high-speed jet-powered drones, adding pressure on Ukraine’s air defense systems, according to the Ukrainian air force.
Explosions reverberated throughout the city during the dark hours, with Kyiv as the main target. However, impacts were reported at 28 different locations across the country. President Zelenskyy mentioned that around 40 people were injured, and air raid alerts remained in effect until dawn.
Characterizing the attack as extensive, Zelenskyy stated on social media that Russia had meticulously planned the assault, combining various types of missiles and drones with the intention of inflicting maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.
On the other hand, allies and neighboring countries swiftly responded to the situation. Poland activated its military aviation operations, ground-based air defense systems, and radar reconnaissance as the Russian assault unfolded on Kyiv. Moreover, Polish and other NATO military aircraft were deployed to monitor the country’s airspace.
Romania’s Defense Ministry reported an unidentified drone crash near the Ukraine border, while Moldova detected an unauthorized drone breaching its airspace.
In response to the escalating tensions, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia for challenging NATO and its partners by violating neighboring states’ sovereignty and escalating risks beyond Ukraine.
Despite the urgent need for missile defense systems in Ukraine, challenges persist. An analysis by The Associated Press revealed a significant decrease in U.S. Patriot inventory levels post-conflict, although the Pentagon retains a substantial stockpile. Lockheed Martin’s efforts to ramp up interceptor production aim to address the shortfall gradually.
Political signals from the U.S. have fluctuated, with previous indications of providing Ukraine with Patriot production licenses now uncertain. The logistics involved in establishing production capabilities in Ukraine could potentially span several years.
The overnight strikes in Kyiv targeted residential areas, damaging buildings, a medical facility, and an educational institution. Emergency teams worked diligently to rescue individuals trapped under debris, with some residents recounting harrowing experiences of the attack.
Ukraine has retaliated by launching long-range drone strikes on Russian soil, targeting oil facilities and other crucial infrastructure. In response, the Russian Defense Ministry reported downing numerous Ukrainian drones over various regions, including Crimea and the Black and Azov seas, during one of Ukraine’s extensive aerial assaults.
