On a chilly and damp winter day, a cozy country pub exudes warmth and charm, beckoning visitors inside. The allure of this quaint pub in a small village in Vale of Glamorgan piqued my interest for three main reasons. Firstly, its well-known reputation for delicious food was enticing. Secondly, as a frequent passerby on my bike, I often felt tempted to abandon my ride and pop in for a pint.
However, the most compelling reason was the pub’s ownership by a renowned sports figure. Two decades ago, I witnessed Gavin Henson make a remarkable kick in Welsh rugby history that turned the tide of a crucial match against England. Henson’s unexpected heroics not only secured a victory for Wales but also propelled him into the limelight as a rugby sensation.
Beyond his on-field success, Henson’s flamboyant appearance and high-profile relationship with singer Charlotte Church earned him celebrity status, earning him the moniker of the “Welsh Posh and Becks.” Despite his fame, Henson’s recent endeavors have focused on maintaining a low profile, opting for a quiet family life in St Brides Major, near his hometown.
In 2019, Henson and his wife, Katie, took over The Fox pub, which underwent a significant renovation before reopening in early 2020. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and Brexit, the pub garnered positive reviews for its hospitality and cuisine. Recently, the establishment made headlines in its search for a new head chef amid industry upheavals.
Stepping into the pub, the ambiance felt familiar yet stylish, adorned with festive Christmas decorations and comfortable furnishings. Sampling Butty Bach ale and Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone lager, we perused the Sunday menu, featuring a selection of appetizing dishes. From crispy ham hock to succulent roast meats, the culinary offerings did not disappoint.
Our meal, including starters, mains, and drinks, came to a reasonable total, reflecting the pub’s value for money. Immersed in the welcoming atmosphere, I savored the experience and overheard fellow diners expressing their intention to return. In essence, my visit to this charming country pub left me longing for more, even if I didn’t catch a glimpse of the legendary sports figure.
