The financial affairs of the Royal Family have long been veiled in secrecy, with some aspects remaining elusive. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the King’s disgraced brother, has resided in a lavish 30-room mansion at the Royal Lodge in Windsor for the past two decades, paying a nominal rent after an initial £7.5 million investment and securing a 75-year lease.

In a similar vein, Prince Edward, another of the King’s brothers, recently came under scrutiny for a comparable arrangement with the Crown Estate, which oversees royal properties straddling the boundary between public and private sectors.

Following the passing of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in April 2021, the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh took up residence at the expansive Bagshot Park in March 1998. Initially leased for £5,000 annually, the lease was later renegotiated to £90,000 per year after significant estate renovations funded by the Duke and the Crown Estate.

These revelations have cast a spotlight on a family with immense wealth. In the aftermath of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s fall from grace due to his association with convicted felon Jeffrey Epstein, parliamentary inquiries have been initiated to scrutinize the Crown Estate properties associated with the Royal Family.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has commenced an investigation into the leasing arrangements of the Prince and Princess of Wales, who recently relocated to Forest Lodge on the Windsor estate. This move has sparked discussions about the transparency and accountability of how taxpayer funds are utilized within the monarchy.

The Sovereign Grant, which provides funding for official royal duties, is just one component of the Royal Family’s financial structure. A portion of the profits generated by the Crown Estate contributes to the Sovereign Grant, raising questions about the monarchy’s financial mechanisms and acquisitions.

The PAC’s inquiry signals a potential shift towards greater transparency and oversight of the Royal Family’s financial operations, shedding light on the allocation and utilization of significant public funds.
