On a pleasant summer evening on June 29, 2022, my son, Ronan, was walking home when he was attacked by two 16-year-old boys who stabbed him twice using a 22-inch ninja sword. The tragic incident left Ronan with fatal injuries, piercing his abdomen and heart.

The perpetrators had purchased the lethal weapon online, evading regulations by using a fake ID to collect it from the post office. This alarming incident prompted me to question how retailers could sell such dangerous items with impunity, knowing their potential to cause harm or death.

I was deeply troubled by the lack of stringent ID checks by workers when selling deadly weapons. Desperate for answers and change, I sought out Sir Keir Starmer, then Leader of the Opposition, whom I met by chance at a café near Euston.

Despite my initial skepticism towards politicians, Sir Keir Starmer showed genuine compassion and attentiveness to a grieving mother fighting for justice. The ninja sword that ended Ronan’s life was still being sold due to legal loopholes exploited by the previous government.

Sir Keir Starmer pledged to ban ninja swords if elected, a promise he fulfilled upon assuming office. The Labour Government has since prioritized combating knife crime, aiming to swiftly reverse the devastating trend.

Collaborating with government officials, I advocated for the implementation of Ronan’s Law, which not only prohibits ninja swords but also enforces penalties on tech companies hosting knife-related content and on retailers selling knives to minors. The introduction of a two-step ID verification process now ensures thorough age checks.

These proactive measures have effectively closed loopholes and directly addressed the online weapons market, holding retailers accountable for their sales. The successful knife surrender initiative, launched ahead of Ronan’s Law, witnessed over 7,000 weapons surrendered across the country, including ninja swords.

In memory of Ronan, a dedicated amnesty bin was installed in Wolverhampton, symbolizing his enduring legacy. The government’s anti-knife robbery task force has significantly reduced such crimes by 10% in the most affected areas, with the West Midlands reporting a notable 30% decline.

The government’s Young Futures program underscores its commitment to prevention by identifying and supporting vulnerable youth to prevent criminal involvement. By investing in education and community resilience, the government aims to address the root causes of violence and offer young people a positive future.

As a mother grieving the loss of her son, I am grateful for the government’s support in enacting strong legislation in Ronan’s honor. The implementation of Ronan’s Law marks a crucial milestone in the fight against knife crime, and I urge continued collaboration between authorities, activists, and communities to sustain progress and drive further change.
