Traditional menstrual products are criticized for neglecting women’s health and comfort. These products, such as pads and tampons from major brands, are often uncomfortable, expensive, and not very effective. Besides, they are now being scrutinized for their environmental impact and potential health hazards.
Disposable period products are typically made with or contain plastic, leading to the release of microplastics into the body. Research from Environmental Science in 2022 revealed that tampons can discharge up to 17 billion nanoplastic fibers while in use, posing health risks.
This continuous exposure to microplastics not only threatens health but also imposes a significant environmental burden. In the UK, approximately 200,000 tonnes of menstrual waste end up in landfills annually.
A study by Natracare found that a single pack of 14 menstrual pads from a popular brand contains as much plastic as five carrier bags. Given that an average person menstruates around 500 times in their lifetime, this results in prolonged plastic exposure.
Microplastics were also detected in placentas in 2020, indicating potential long-term health effects. A study from Toxicological Sciences in 2024 found microplastics present in every human placenta tested, showing widespread contamination in human blood and breast milk.
Concerns over microplastics and pesticides in period products have led to a demand for non-toxic and plastic-free alternatives, prompting brands to make changes. The Environment Agency initiated the Rethink Periods program in schools to educate students about sustainable period products.
Several retailers, including Sainsbury’s, Aldi, and Superdrug, have taken steps to reduce plastic use in their own-brand tampons. The rise in awareness has driven the need for safer, eco-friendly period options.
Dr. Olivia Ahn, co-founder of the microplastic-free brand FLUUS, emphasizes the importance of addressing microplastic exposure in period products due to its health implications. She advocates for consumer education and the adoption of plastic-free menstrual solutions.
FLUUS and other plastic-free period products are emerging as alternatives in the market. Consumers are encouraged to explore these options for a safer and more sustainable period experience.
