A recent report from consumer group Which? has revealed that while millions of people are still connected through the major mobile networks such as EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, these providers are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to smaller competitors. The survey, which gathered responses from over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, indicated that lesser-known networks often offer better value and stronger customer service.
The study aimed to assess which mobile providers are meeting customer expectations and which ones are not. It found that the established “Big Four” – EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone – are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of customer satisfaction and service quality.
Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY, while among the major providers, EE performed the best, ranking ninth. O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.
Price emerged as a significant factor in the report, with customers on the Big Four paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, while users on smaller networks paid only around £9. Despite the lower prices, many smaller providers utilize the infrastructure of larger networks, providing comparable signal and service quality without the premium cost associated with well-known brands.
The report also highlighted that switching mobile networks can be a straightforward process, with some customers able to transition in as little as 10 minutes. One participant shared their experience of leaving O2 for SMARTY, saving approximately £200 annually by switching to a more cost-effective plan.
Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform the major mobile firms by offering better customer service and more affordable deals. She encouraged customers, especially those nearing the end of their contracts or seeking to save money, to consider switching to providers that offer better value.
