Renowned music video director Diane Martel has passed away at the age of 63. Martel, known for her work on Robin Thicke’s controversial music video “Blurred Lines” and collaborations with artists such as Miley Cyrus, succumbed to breast cancer, surrounded by her loved ones.

Her family confirmed her peaceful passing at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, expressing their grief over losing her after her brave battle with breast cancer. Martel is survived by her Aunt, Gail Merrifield Papp, her cherished cats Poki, PopPop, PomPom, and a multitude of close friends.

One of Martel’s most notable projects was the “Blurred Lines” music video with Robin Thicke, which dominated the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for 12 weeks. Despite its success, the song faced criticism for its controversial lyrics that were deemed suggestive of non-consensual behavior.

In response to the backlash, Martel defended her work in an interview with Grantland, emphasizing that she directed the female models in a deliberate manner to convey a sense of empowerment. She clarified that while the lyrics may be perceived as questionable, she viewed the video as a playful and self-aware piece of art.

Not limited to “Blurred Lines,” Martel also collaborated with Miley Cyrus on the music video for “We Can’t Stop,” aiming to create a visually stimulating and innovative piece that she described as a “giant selfie.” Martel praised Cyrus for her creativity and authenticity, highlighting her as a unique and exceptional talent in the industry.

Throughout her career, Martel worked with numerous music icons, including Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Pink, Alicia Keys, and Franz Ferdinand. Her diverse portfolio included directing Mariah Carey’s iconic holiday song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and crafting visuals for hits like Luther Vandross’s “Dance With My Father Again” and Avril Lavigne’s “Nobody’s Home.” Her final credit as a director was for Alicia Keys’ track “Lifeline” in 2023.

With a rich history of music video direction, Martel’s repertoire also featured works such as Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle,” Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You,” and Britney Spears’ “3,” showcasing her versatility and creative vision in the industry.
