The horse racing community is in mourning following the tragic passing of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes at the young age of 19.

A joint statement from the Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Professional Jockeys Association conveyed the sorrowful news. They announced the death of licensed apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes, aged 19, who tragically passed away at his residence near Newmarket earlier that day.

Described as a beloved son and brother, Tommie was a valued member of George Boughey’s racing team. His family, Jeremy and Tonie, have requested privacy during this difficult time.

Having recently ridden at Nottingham, Tommie Jakes was scheduled to ride for trainer Ismail Mohammed at Chelmsford later that evening. Known as one of the most promising young talents in the jockey community, the teenager had secured 59 victories from 519 appearances since 2023.

His debut win as an apprentice came aboard Suzi’s Connoisseur, trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam, at Lingfield in March of the same year. Hailing from a racing background, Tommie followed his father’s footsteps into the sport after assisting Michael Dickinson in his training endeavors.

On October 18, Tommie achieved his final win riding Boughey’s horse Fouroneohfever at Catterick, showcasing his skill and dedication to the sport. He also enjoyed successful partnerships with trainers Linda Perratt and Alice Haynes during his career.

Brant Dunshea, the acting chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority, expressed deep sadness over Tommie’s passing. He described Tommie as a talented young rider with a bright future, praised for his skills and attitude by trainers. The racing community, along with Tommie’s family, friends, and colleagues, mourn his loss deeply.

Marking the tragic event, Chelmsford and Southwell racecourses will pay respects, while support services from the racing community and the BHA will be available to those affected.

A social media post from George Boughey’s account expressed the team’s heartbreak over Tommie’s passing, highlighting his talent, kindness, and hard work that made him an invaluable member of their team.

For those in need of support, the IJF and PJA provided helpline numbers for jockeys, Racing Welfare, and Samaritans.
